Located at the entrance channel to Port Everglades, the center provides state-of-the-art research and collaboration space for NSU’s research faculty. The five-story facility was designed and built to withstand coastal storm surges and hurricanes, and to achieve Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Made possible in part by a $15 million U.S. Department of Commerce grant, the new research facility focuses on management and conservation of South Florida coral reefs, which constitute 84{b4cccc6a007deb64f5f5cd794cff9ad670caa3eee3c5b5f059f1992e7bdd8897} of the nation’s coral reef resources. The unique structure, with expanses of glass and elliptical structural slabs, was designed for maximum flexibility in configuring its labs. To provide scientists with seawater for their research aquariums, the project team installed a well-water system that pipes salt water through the building.
