MCC Completes New South Florida Campus Building for University

MIAMI LAKES, FL. – Miller Construction Company has completed its third project for The Graham Companies, a 51,200-square-foot building in Miami Lakes that will be the new South Florida campus of Sistema Universitario Ana G. Méndez.  The University is a non-profit dual language institution of higher education.

As general contractor for the $10 million built-to-suit to lease project, Miller Construction Company fast-tracked the structural shell and interior to ensure delivery for the University’s fall semester. After topping off the two-story building, Miller’s crews worked simultaneously on shell completion and interior build-out to accelerate construction and limit the client’s costs.

In constructing the building, which includes complex nursing, IT and science labs, Miller Construction Company quarterbacked communications to keep all the University’s relevant departments updated. The general contractor coordinated vendors for security systems and access control, low-voltage cabling, audio-video design, lab equipment and building signage.  Miller also oversaw the transition from conceptual MEP system design, which the project’s Puerto Rico-based architect created, to final design by a local engineer and architect, ensuring compliance with Florida Building Code and High Velocity Hurricane Zone requirements.

“Miller’s team streamlined the schedule for maximum efficiency by handling both the shell and interior contracts,” said Larry Nienaber, Vice President, Construction for The Graham Companies. “They created a state-of-the-art learning environment for the University, and through their professional approach, returned savings to us at project completion.” Sistema Universitario Ana G. Mendez has leased the building from The Graham Companies for 15 years and will relocate from its previous South Florida campus location in Miramar.

In addition to its 21 classrooms, library and administrative offices, the new campus includes nursing labs with interactive mannequins in hospital beds. A control room records and monitors all student nursing interactions with the “patients,” and a debriefing room enables students to review their performance. In addition, science labs feature 3D projectors that can connect classes with the Puerto Rico-based University’s other centers throughout Florida, Maryland, Texas and the Caribbean.
