Republic Services’ Corporate Headquarters Incorporates ‘Green’ Features
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 10, 2008 - Miller Construction Company is "recycling" an older facility and adding state-of-the-art "green" features to create the new corporate headquarters for Republic Services, Inc., a leading nationwide provider of environmental services and one of the largest publicly traded companies in South Florida.
The 65,000-square-foot Class A office building in Sunrise, Florida will be one of South
Florida’s first corporate headquarters registered to achieve silver Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a non-profit
organization expanding sustainable building practices.
“Our goal is to create an energy efficient, environmentally friendly office building that is wellsuited to the needs of today’s work force,” said Tom Miller, CEO of Miller Construction Company.
Noting that Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG) will be able to consolidate its 170- employee corporate workforce, now situated in two Fort Lauderdale buildings, Miller added, “The company’s new headquarters was designed for flexibility to accommodate its growth for the next 10 years.”
Under a fast-track design/build contract, Miller is renovating the interior and exterior of an existing building, adding new features that will enhance air quality and energy efficiency. For example, the project incorporates 7,000 square feet of roof-top solar panels that will supply an estimated 8 to 9 percent of the building's power. “Only one other project in the region has installed a solar energy system of this magnitude,” said Vince Campo, Miller project manager.
Republic Services’ new headquarters will also have more than 40 skylights and large exterior windows to maximize daylight throughout the office space. A sophisticated dimming system for the building’s light fixtures will respond to natural light conditions, ensuring that less power is used on sunny days, Campo added.
Miller is also building three 10,000-gallon underground cisterns to collect rainwater that will be used for watering the landscape and flushing toilets. “This is an innovative, technologically advanced system of pumps, pipes and valves that will reduce the facility’s overall water usage,” Campo said. “We’re also installing water-saving, low-flow plumbing fixtures.”
Other green features at the new corporate headquarters include:
- High-efficiency air conditioning and air handling units, including filters to ensure clean indoor air quality.
- Reflective panels to reduce heat on the roof and reflective glaze on windows.
- Increased amount of insulation to keep the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
- High recycled content of building materials.
In addition to the energy efficient features, the building will provide extra benefits for employees. For example, the design incorporates a health and fitness center that will be open for all employees. The facility will also have an on-site training and educational facility.
“This entire project has focused around recycling and increasing our energy efficiency,” said Jim O'Connor, Republic’s Chairman and CEO. “Our efforts began in 2006 when we purchased an old building and decided to recycle as much of the building as possible rather than tearing it down. Ultimately, we saved more than 3,000 cubic yards of construction and demolition material from being land-filled.”
Founded in 1998, Republic Services, Inc. is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as a publicly traded company.
